At the Society of American Business Editors and Writers in Seattle, Microsoft chairperson Bill Gates let it slip that Microsoft's next-generation gaming console was coming out in 2005, and a few days later MTV confirmed November 2005 to be the month of the launch, and that the device will be known as the Xbox 360. |
Right after this, MTV began running a listing for MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed, the special show would allow the public to see the Xbox 360 for the first time. Besides saying how the show will also feature "tours of the design labs, interviews with the designers, behind-the-scenes and inside scoop", the listing also promised to feature "trailers of the newest games that aredue out in November for the new Xbox"
This announcement by MTV puts all doubts to rest, and the next Xbox, that is Xbox 360, was finally launched on the fourth anniversary of the original Xbox's release, which was mid-November 2001. However, despite the clear wording of the MTV announcement and listing, Microsoft representatives said at that time they could not comment on it for the time being.
Nonetheless, the Xbox 360 was launched in 2005, and it was an immediate success all over the world. The console was sold out all over the world on its release other than in Japan.
According to Microsoft, as of March 31, 2009, around 30.2 million Xbox 360 units have been sold throughout the world. The console is available in three configurations, mainly Arcade, Pro and Elite. Each configuration has its own set of accessories.
