One of the most versatile gaming consoles is the Nintendo Wii. The most distinguishing feature about this gaming console is that it comes with a wireless remote that can detect three dimensional movements, and it can also be used as a handheld pointer. |
The Wii comes with an IBM processor which is termed ‘Broadway’, and its ATI graphics processor is called ‘Hollywood’. It is the combination of these two processors that gives the Wii its outstanding processing capabilities and excellent graphics. Additional features are its 88 MB main memory, 2 USB ports, 512 built-in flash memory, Slots for SD and SDHC memory cards, and port for Nintendo GameCube Memory Card. It comes with a slot-loading disc drive that is compatible with 8 cm Nintendo GameCube Game Disc and also with a 12 cm Wii Optical Disc.
The Wii was first brought the notice of the people in 2004 during the E3 press conference. A prototype of this console was revealed in September 2005 during the Tokyo Game Show. And finally, the Wii was released for retail sale in late 2006 to all global markets.
It was on September 14, 2006, when Nintendo announced all the release information for the different markets, primarily Japan, North America, South America, Australasia, Asia and Europe. This information included the release dates for different continents and countries, pricing and the number of units that would be available in different parts of the world. It was a foregone conclusion that majority of the units would be heading to the United States.
The Wii was released in the US markets on November 19, 2006, and people could purchase it for $249.99. On December 8, 2006, it hit the UK markets. It is interesting to note that many people in the UK had placed orders before the actual release, and when the Wii was officially released, there was a short supply as many retail and online stores could not fulfill those orders. It was released in South Korea on April 26, 2008. It came to Taiwan only on July 12, 2008. Since the day of its release till today, the Nintendo Wii has sold more units that Microsoft Xbox 360 and PlayStation.
