Right from the time of its release in the year 2006, it has been quite popular. It sold more units than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This trend was seen right from the first month of its release until the first quarter of the year 2007. In September 2007, its was the Financial Times that reported that Wii outstood in sales when compared to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, based on figure from Enterbrain, NPD Group, and GfK. In 2008, Enterbrain reported that the Wii was the best selling gaming console in Japan. According to NDP group, Wii sold about 10.9 million units by July 1, 2008. This figure made it the leader in home gaming consoles.
By December 2008, Nintendo Wii sold about 7,526,821 units, as reported by Enterbrain. In 2009, GfK Chart-Track reported that sale of Nintendo Wii, was a whopping 4.9 million units. By March of 2009, it was announced at the Game Developers Conference, that this game console has sold about 50 million units, making it the most popular and best game console device to hit the world markets.
The Wii is so popular that at times the stores have a short supply because they cannot keep up with the demand. The popularity of the Wii is mainly due to its remote, which can be used as a handheld point device as well as a movement detecting device in three dimensions.
